In stroke and other time-critical neurological emergencies, every minute matters. Established acute treatments remain central. Neuroprotection research asks whether additional measures can help protect threatened brain tissue while definitive treatment proceeds.

What needs to be tested

Research must determine how early an intervention can begin, which patients are suitable, what exposure is safe and which endpoints best capture a clinically meaningful effect. Imaging, biomarkers, functional outcomes and safety can all play a role.

Animal models, mechanism data and external clinical signals may support a research hypothesis. They do not establish that a specific method improves outcomes in patients.
